STEVE BROWN

BIOGRAPHY

Steve Brown was born on June 6, 1947 in Santa Barbara, CA; he now lives in Northern California.

Steve Brown is a local Northern Californian sculptor working with old growth redwood native to his home along the Mendocino coast.  With pieces weighing over 2 tons and over 30 feet high, Steve Brown is constantly taking risks and pushing the limits of his medium.  We are proud to present a number of new works in his portfolio.

Steve started drawing at an early age and learned to use watercolors with the encouragement of his mother who had studied art at Scripps College. He decided at six years of age he wanted to be an artist.

Steve attended Santa Barbara City College, Sonoma State (1967-1969) and graduated from UCSB in 1970 with an painting emphasis.  As a member of Santa Barbara Art Association from 1967 to 1980, he received several awards from various jurors. He also had several one-man shows in 1973 at a number of Santa Barbara galleries where he worked primarily with oil and utilized impressionist and cubist ideas.

Steve moved to the Mendocino coast in 1981. There, he started working with redwood roots and burls to bring out what he felt to be the basic sculptural form, rather than starting with a preconceived idea.
