Lucinda Kasser

Lucinda Kasser had an exciting childhood as the daughter of a career military officer and an artist mother, traveling throughout the United States and Europe.  She attributes her decision to become an artist to her mother who taught her to love and be fascinated with the visual world. Spending formative years in Paris, within a culture that held art above almost everything else also made a lasting impression.

After initial study at the University of Maryland in Munich, Kasser moved to Northern California where she earned her B.A. in Art at Humboldt State University, and her M.A. from California State University, Sacramento. A perpetual student, she has attended many painting workshops with notable instructors: Peggi-Kroll Roberts, Ray Roberts, Kathleen Dunphy, Randal Sexton, John Cosby, George Strickland, Craig Nelson, Laure Kersey, and William Hook. She began teaching drawing, painting and art education at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California in 1987 and served three terms as chair of the art department.

Early in her career she was invited to participate in two important projects, “Contemporary Artists Paint Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra,” and then, from “Sea to Shining Sea: A Reflection of America,” sponsored by American Artist Magazine, the California Art Club, and the Haggin Museum. These projects included group, painting expeditions to Yosemite, the Hudson River Valley, and the Monterey coast and resulted in museum exhibitions in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, and California.  Meeting and painting with artists from throughout the United States inspired her ongoing study of “alla prima” painting methods which necessitate more spontaneous and decisive brushstrokes and color mixing.  While she doesn’t always employ this approach, she attributes this discipline and the large number of quick studies produced to strengthening her paintings.

Over the past thirty-five years, her paintings have been included in numerous invitational and juried exhibitions, and are held in public and private collections through the United States.  She has been commissioned to paint intimate portraits as well as large murals for public buildings.

With her retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2019, she has been able to direct more of her energy on her passion for painting.  In her art she hopes to portray what Henry James referred to as “the felt life.” Traditional subject matter - still life, landscape and portraiture - and the play of light upon form continue to hold her interest. Her paintings reveal the beauty of everyday experience. In their making and viewing, her paintings are for contemplation, insight, and celebration. As she says, “With my paintings I am hoping to pull you over to see what I see and share my awe!”
